Trends Spotted at IHG® Americas and HD Expo in Vegas

Spotting trends at hospitality conferenceLast week, Las Vegas was bursting with hospitality professionals from all over the country. The annual IHG® Americas Conference was held at the Sands Expo Convention Center from May 13 - 16, and just a few blocks away, the 2019 Hospitality Design (HD) Expo took place at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center from May 15 - 17.

Our team was fortunate to attend both events, and we are delighted to share the most important takeaways from these hospitality conferences today.

IHG® Americas Conference 2019

Along with IHG® owners, managers, and suppliers from across the nation, we came together to immerse in brand innovations and ideas. There was plenty to take in:

New Prototype Designs

At the conference, IHG® released the new prototypes for Holiday Inn H4, Staybridge Suites, Candlewood Suites, and Holiday Inn Express.

The design packages for Holiday Inn H4 and Holiday Inn Express (Formula Blue) now have new updates and color schemes. Though no official specifications have been announced, we expect the Formula Blue updates will involve changes in guest room FF&E. Alternatively, Holiday Inn H4’s prototypical overhaul focuses on incorporating multiple F&B options for guests.

For Candlewood Suites, the change involves new exterior design as well as modern updates for interiors such as guest rooms and public spaces. The updated Staybridge Suites prototype also features a contemporary refresh for interior and exterior.

Brand Launch

With so much change in the air, IHG® took the opportunity to unveil their latest hospitality brand. Atwell Suites is an upper-midscale offering to meet growing market demand, providing guests with the ability to build their own stay experience. This new all-studio suites hotel brand expects to compete with Home2 Suites by Hilton.

Conference Buzz

Our team was able to meet and speak with attendees while representing Innvision at our tradeshow booth. As a result, we gathered that many franchise owners are focused on upcoming Property Improvement Plans (PIPs) and renovations in the pipeline, particularly for Holiday Inn Express Formula Blue and Holiday Inn H4 properties.

HD Expo 2019

HD Expo is the leading hospitality design conference and trade show, inviting attendees to experience in-depth presentations, networking opportunities, and product introductions galore – and this year was no exception. Here are the top trends we gathered:

Print Progress

New printing technology makes it possible to print on a wide assortment of materials and is now more accessible than ever. The minimum order requirement for graphic prints is significantly lower than we’ve seen in the past, enabling hoteliers to achieve a custom design more easily, whether you want a single graphic wallcovering or intricately patterned flooring.

A notable new use of printing tech we spotted was printed wood veneer. For such pieces, low-cost materials like maple are printed on to mimic the appearance of a higher-quality wood like teak. Wood veneer is a great alternative option from plastic laminate, as you can achieve the characteristics of natural wood and remain cost conscious.

Mix of Materials

The HD Expo showroom put a variety of textures and finishes on display, with seating and case goods featuring leather insets and metal accents rather than having a single texture. One stand-out trend was the creative fusion of metal and wood details to deliver millwork designs inspired by whatever mood you want, from retro to rustic.

Driving Domestic

With China’s import tariffs vastly increasing the cost of imported goods, there has been an influx in domestic FF&E manufacturers. Domestic vendors for case goods are growing in popularity as tariffs and freight costs rise.

The Future is Bright

In our industry, color schemes often mirror the economic state, such as the use of neutral, beige tones during a recession. Now, we’re seeing a shift towards vibrant, saturated colors like deep greens and blues in hotel design. Bright jewel tones introduce a modern glam aesthetic to contemporary hotels.
