AAHOA conference key takeaways 2017

With more than 6,500 attendees, the Asian American Hotel Owners Association’s annual convention (held at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, TX this year) is larger than it’s ever been.

The four-day event featured panelists offering insights into all areas of the hotel industry, including the opening general session where eleven CEOs of top hotel brand companies were represented, which AAHOA President and CEO Chip Rogers referred to as an “unprecedented” gathering.

Here are a few takeaways from the conference.

The Evolution of AAHOA

During the conference’s first general session, AAHOA chairman Bharat (Bruce) Patel noted the achievements of the association, stating: "Our footprint and impact today goes far beyond the fact that we own almost half the hotels in this country. Words like leadership and industry presence are clear identifiers of your AAHOA today."

In many ways, the conference – aptly themed “Evolving through Collaboration” was a celebration of how far AAHOA has come. As the largest hotel owners’ association in the world and an advocate for the entire hospitality industry, AAHOA has evolved into an influential political powerhouse.

New Development by the Numbers

Perhaps one of the biggest things to come out of the convention is a look at how much development is planned.

Within the next two years, upper and upper midscale hotel builds are expected to grow. Here are a few stand-out observations regarding hotels built with 200 rooms or less in the coming years:

  • Projected to grow by an average of 3% per year
  • Makeup 89% of total hotels constructed in 2018 and 2019
  • TN and TX are the strongest development markets in that timeframe

Final Thoughts

Celebration was in the air in San Antonio, and the AAHOA conference served as an incredible motivational tool for hotel owners and vendors alike, reminding all to celebrate victories while staying focused on the future.

A robust event packed with a range of sessions for educational to inspirational, the conference offered ‘something for everyone’ – and with more than 3,000-lifetime members of the association, that’s no small feat.
